Section 497 of IPC dealt with adultery but was struck down as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in Joseph Shine v. Union of India (2018). The Court held it violated equality and dignity. Adultery is no longer a criminal offence but remains a ground for divorce. Other sections deal with different offences.
