The first non-Congress government at the Centre was formed in 1977 after the Emergency period and was led by Morarji Desai of the Janata Party. This marked a major shift in Indian politics and ended Congress dominance. Jayaprakash Narayan inspired the movement but did not become Prime Minister. Other leaders served later.
